A Marine trooper was killed while eight of his companions were wounded when elements of the Marine Battalion Landing Team-8 (MBLT-2) were ambushed by New People’s Army (NPA) insurgents in Kalamansig town, Sultan Kudarat Monday morning.
Capt. Arvin Encinas, 6th Infantry Division spokesperson, in an interview with the Philippine News Agency, said the 20-minute ambush took place in Sitio Pinagdaanan, Barangay Hinalaan, of the said locality.
He added that a platoon from the MBLT-2 were conducting security patrols in the area in the wake of NPA recruiting reports, when ambushed by an estimated 10 rebels, triggering a 20-minute firefight.
The NPAs quickly retreated after sustaining an undetermined number of casualties. Pursuit operations are still ongoing.
