President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping arrived today around 12:30 in Manila for the 2015 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting. The Chinese leaders’ arrival was approximately an hour after United States President Obama’s arrival and minutes after arrival of South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
President of Vietnam Truong Tang Sang also arrived earlier today.
China is opposing possible inclusion of West Philippine Sea issue during the APEC Leaders’ Meeting, while US President Obama is expected to raise the said issue.
“APEC is the most important forum for economic cooperation and trade in the Asia-Pacific. It is not a proper venue to talk about the issue of the South China Sea, and must not create convenience or conditions for the introduction of sensitive issues such as those in political and security fields,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei said Monday.
“The host country, the Philippines, has stated clearly that sensitive issues concerning politics and security will not be discussed. We hope that all participants would jointly secure the nature of APEC as an economic forum, focus on development and cooperation, create a favorable atmosphere for the meeting and ensure it a success,” the Chinese spokesperson added.
