The Philippines and Vietnam today established a strategic partnership that will enhance economic, agricultural, defense, and maritime engagements. Philippines Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and Vietnam Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh signed the Joint Statement on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between Philippines and Vietnam, during the bilateral meeting between President Benigno Aquino III and Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang at Malacanang Palace.
President Aquino described the strategic partnership as vital step towards strengthening the friendship our peoples have enjoyed all these centuries.
“We believe that the establishment of this Strategic Partnership will provide further impetus to deepen our cooperation, particularly in the areas of economic, agricultural, defense, and maritime engagement—areas that are truly vital to the strategic interests of both our nations,” President Aquino said during the joint press conference with his Vietnamese counterpart.
“President Aquino and I just had fruitful talks with many tangible outcomes. This is indeed a historic event, marking a new era for cooperation between our two countries, while making contributions to the maintenance of peace, stability and prosperity in the region,” – Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang
“In terms of defense relations, we welcome the active engagement and cooperation between our respective defense and military establishments. As seafaring peoples, we look to initiatives that will enhance our capacities to better respond to challenges and situations in our common seas,” President Aquino said.
