PDP-Laban presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he will recommend to Congress the restoration of death penalty through public hanging if elected president. Duterte wants the restoration of death penalty to solve country’s problem in illegal drugs. “I will recommend to Congress the restoration of death penalty by hanging in public,” the mayor said.
“Drug addiction is easy money. Once you get it, it’s a done deal, you’re already into eternal addiction. I will not hesitate to use the military and the police and maybe, exercise the extraordinary power of the President to stop it,” he said during his Sunday program “Gikan sa masa, para sa masa” as quoted in Inquirer.net. He said he can use the military because drug addiction if not solved will become a serious national threat.
He said corruption, illegal drugs, and criminality need to stop during the first three to six months of his presidency.
He added that he will recommend the abolition of Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006 protecting the rights of minors in conflict with the law authored by former Senator Francisco Pangilinan. He said as president he will also recommend the creation of special criminal courts to try drug cases.
