Development of comprehensive cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries is one of priorities for Russia, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said April 16 during the first informal meeting of defence ministers of Russia and the ASEAN member-states in Moscow.
The said defence ministers’ meeting was ahead of Russia-ASEAN summit scheduled to be held in the southern Russian resort city of Sochi on May 19-20.
“The session results have demonstrated concurrence between methods of Russia and ASEAN member-states in international conflict resolving, countering new security challenges and threats, terrorism first of all,” said Shoigu.
Russian Minister of Defence proposed to develop multilateral and bilateral cooperation with ASEAN countries in directions of mutual interest. Mutual interest includes fighting against international terrorism, providing security in the sea, providing assistance in natural and anthropogenic disaster recovery operations, military medicine, and humanitarian mine-clearing operations.
After the meeting with ASEAN defense ministers, Shoigu conducted bilateral meetings with his ASEAN counterparts.
ASEAN is comprised of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
“We are focused on expanding [our] contact with the ASEAN countries in a bilateral format. For this purpose, a series of meetings with the defense ministers of the Association member states have been scheduled, during which military and military-technical cooperation will be discussed in particular,” Shoigu said at the first ever meeting of the ASEAN defense ministers in Moscow.
