The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Saturday unveiled the new Hybrid Electric Train. DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) Executive Director Engineer Robert Dizon led the ceremonial ribbon cutting for the launch of Philippine National Railways’ (PNR) newly-built hybrid electric train at the PNR Tutuban Station in Tondo, Manila.
He was assisted by DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo and PNR General Manager Joseph Allan Dilay.
MIRDC, the lead agency in developing the Hybrid Electric Train, is a branch of DOST acting as the sole government entity directly supporting the metals and engineering industry with services designed to enhance its competitive advantage.
“This proves yet again that our engineers are very capable to develop high-tech systems if only they are empowered to pursue such R&D (research/development) activities,” Montejo said. “Most important is that this is local. There was a lot of value adding done by our engineers to come up with this electric hybrid train.”
