The acquisition of two (2) 92-meter heavy-weather, high endurance Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRV) for the Philippine Coast Guard is now for President Rodrigo Duterte’s approval through NEDA Board. The project is dubbed as Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Phase 2.
The first phase of Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project for the PCG, providing 10 44-meter Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs), was awarded to Japan Marine United (JMU) last year.
Last May 2016, the first of ten ordered 44-meter MRRVs was formally named Tubbataha, one of the lighthouses in the Philippines situated in Tubbataha Marine National Park, Palawan. Delivery of the first two 44-meter MRRVs is scheduled this year. From first delivery, succeeding deliveries are expected every quarter until completion of 10 units in 2018.
Phase 1, with contract price of 12,790,000,000 Japanese Yen, is being implemented under Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) Loan Agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Negotiations with Japan through JICA for possibility of acquiring two bigger 92-meter MRRVs started after the awarding of Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project Phase 1.
NEDA Investment Coordination Committee-Cabinet Committee (ICC-CabCom) said Phase 2 will strengthen Coast Guard’s coast or watch patrol and search and rescue capabilities and help them comply with international commitments on maritime safety and security, and marine environmental protection. The total project cost is estimated at PhP8.02 billion with an implementation period of 2016-2021.
