United States State Department Press Office Director Elizabeth Trudeau said in a press briefing dated August 8 that the State Department has summoned Philippines’ Chargé d’Affairés in Washington to clarify President Rodrigo Duterte’s ‘inappropriate comments’ about US Ambassador to Philippines Philip Goldberg.
“I would say two things on that. The first, specifically on the remarks, we’ve seen those inappropriate comments made about Ambassador Goldberg,” Trudeau said when asked regarding the issue.
She added that Goldberg is the most senior American diplomat and was assigned to different posts. “He’s a multi-time ambassador, one of our most senior U.S. diplomats.”
“We have asked the Philippines charge to come into the State Department to clarify those remarks (which happened today),” Trudeau said without giving further details.
President Duterte, last week before the soldiers at Camp Lapu-Lapu in Cebu City, called the American envoy ‘bakla’. “Buwisit ako diyan. Nakikisali doon sa eleksyon, giving statement here and there. He was not supposed to do that.”
