Liberian-registered merchant tanker Tasco collided with Philippine Navy’s strategic sealift vessel (SSV) BRP Tarlac Monday night. In GMA News Online’s report, the Navy said the tanker collided while the SSV was anchored 1,000 yards south of Ensign Majini Pier at Naval Station Romulo Espaldon at around 7:46 pm.

BRP Tarlac obtained minor damage in right forward bulwark and side ramp, Naval Forces Western Mindanao commander Rear Admiral Jorge Amba said. He also said Navy personnel was hurt.

The tanker was prevented to continue with its voyage to Bintulo, Malaysia pending investigation.

BRP Tarlac is serving as the command-and-control ship in the ongoing sea denial operations being conducted as part of government efforts to eliminate the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) threat. BRP Tarlac was commissioned during short ceremonies at Pier 13, Manila South Harbor last June 1.

She is operating under Philippine Fleet’s Sealift Amphibious Force.

The Philippines has a two-SSV order with the Indonesian shipbuilder worth PHP3.8 billion. The second SSV is reportedly 60% complete and is expected to be delivered May 2017.
