President Rodrigo Duterte today met with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the sidelines of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos.
The Philippines and Japan have strong diplomatic ties which dates back to 1889 when the first consulate of Japan in Manila was established.
The President is representing the entire Filipino nation at the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits at the National Convention Center in Vientiane, Laos.
“I am leaving for Vientiane, Laos to join other ASEAN leaders at the 28th and 29th Summits and Related Summits,” the President said in his departure speech at Davao International Airport September 5.
“This will be my first meeting with other leaders of ASEAN Member-States as well as the leaders of the ASEAN’s important dialogue partners including Australia, China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States, that I will take the opportunity to discuss with them important regional and international issues that impact on the peace, security, stability, and the prosperity of our region,” he added.
