The organizer of the Paraw Regatta Festival is hoping to preserve Iloilo’s rich culture, tradition, and history and as it gears for its 45th year in 2017.
Rachel N. Manero, events coordinator of the 45th Iloilo Paraw Regatta, said that the festival depicted the chronicle of the Barter of Panay, the story of the 10 Bornean Datus who settled in San Joaquin, Iloilo, which they reached through “paraws” as their mode of transportation.
Aside from preserving the rich heritage, the annual event will also serve as venue to recognize the fisherfolk who make use of paraws in finding their source of income and give them pride and happiness since the sailing competition that highlights the festival is participated by their sector.
Manero said that innovations were introduced when Dr. Ronald Raymond Lacson Sebastian of the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University became president of the Paraw Regatta Foundation last year.
The preparations for the festival kicked off last week when it was officially launched by the city government and the foundation.
