China invokes ‘historical facts’ for ownership of Senkakus ‘since ancient times’

February 16, 2017 by Joel Dizon

The Chinese government has once again invoked “historical facts” to claim ownership over Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Dao) since “ancient times” after Japan’s education ministry released on a draft of new curriculum guidelines which require elementary and junior high schools to teach in classes that Senkaku Islands are “inherent” territory of Japan.

“Dao and its affiliated islands have been China’s inherent territory since ancient times. China’s resolve and determination to uphold its territorial sovereignty is unwavering. Whatever Japan says or does, the fact that Diaoyu Dao belongs to China will not change,” Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said February 15 during a press conference.

“We once again urge Japan to respect historical facts, stop provocations, instill a right approach to history in the younger generations, and demonstrate a genuine commitment to improving its relations with China by taking real actions,” the Chinese spokesperson added.
