Japanese firm Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. donated 2 million yen as assistance fund in support of the reconstruction program of the damage caused by the recent earthquake in Surigao del Norte, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
President of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. in Japan – in his letter to Philippine Embassy in Tokyo Charge d’ Affaires, a.i. Eduardo M.R. Meñez – conveyed his deepest sympathies to the victims of and expressed condolences to the families of those who passed away caused by the recent earthquake.
Sumitomo produces nickel and cobalt intermediate products from low-grade nickel ore in Surigao del Norte. Sumitomo also donated ¥50 million in 2013 for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda.
Sumitomo Metal Mining Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer Mr. Mikinobu Ogata represented its President at the symbolic hand over of the letter of donation to Mr. Meñez held in Tokyo.
Secretary of Socio-Economic Planning and National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Director-General Ernesto M. Pernia and Philippine Ambassador-designate to Japan Jose C. Laurel V witnessed the event. Both Philippine officials were in Tokyo for the Philippine Investment Seminar and the 35th Joint Meeting of the Japan-Philippines Economic Cooperation Committee held on 28 February 2017.
