As the first horizon of Armed Force of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program ends this year, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the government is now looking for platforms that can be used to boost the country’s external defense.
“As we are now in the Second Horizon of our Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program, we are looking into the acquisition of more equipment for our external defense missions,” he said.
Second horizon will run from 2018 to 2022 with expected funding of P100 billion.
The Defense chief did not give specific details, however, he said it is possible that these include missile-armed frigates, anti-submarine helicopters, and multi-role fighters, long-range patrol aircraft.
In couple of months, all 12 FA-50PH “Fighting Eagle” Fighter/Surface Attack/Lead-in Fighter Trainer (F/SA/LIFT) aircraft will be completed. The second and final strategic sealift vessel is also expected to delivered.
Missile armed attack crafts are also expected to be delivered towards the end of the year.
Two anti-submarine helicopters and two missile-armed frigates are also expected to be delivered in coming years, contracts were signed under the first horizon. 8 Assault Amphibious Vehicles were also ordered.
Also under the first horizon, cargo and transport aircraft, combat utility and attack helicopters, rifles, land mobility assets, armored vehicles, and communication equipment were acquired. with PNA
