“The American-owned Army and Navy Club, it’s now so beautiful, much maybe prettier than the original one,” President Rodrigo Duterte said during the Grand Opening of Rizal Park Hotel, formerly Manila Army and Navy Club.
“What is very consoling is that all of the American properties are already in the hands of the Chinese,” he said. “Very good.”
The revival of the historical landmark was a project of Simon Paz, a Filipino-Chinese, of the Oceanville Hotel and Spa Corporation.
“The revival and restoration of this iconic and historical landmark are the manifestations of our common desire to promote and preserve our vibrant culture and rich history. The vision and effort it took in conserving this heritage site are truly admirable,” the President said in his speech.
“It is likewise noteworthy that this project was undertaken considering the tremendous cost and risk it might incur,” he added. “Restoring a building is more generally expensive than constructing a new one.”
“We will continue to support the initiatives of our private sectors in fostering our patrimony and posterity. In return, this government will pursue measures to make the Philippines a safer, more convenient and more attractive place for tourists and investors,” the President said.
