President Rodrigo Duterte’s special envoy to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Jose De Venecia Jr. (JDV) is proposing to suspend the issue of sovereignty in West Philippine Sea by the Philippines, China, and other claimant states to avoid war and conduct a joint exploration.
“I propose that we suspend the issue of sovereignty over our territorial claims or their territorial claims, or other territorial claims in the South China Sea to avoid war, to avoid conflict, to avoid tension,” JDV told Jessica Soho in GMA News TV’s State of the Nation with Jessica Soho special report series Pivot to China.
“We could have joint exploration of the South China Sea,” JDV added.
The Philippine and China are currently in talks for joint exploration of oil and natural gas in West Philippine Sea.
“It’s complicated because you have the commercial side. It has to be commercially and economically viable and of course there are industry standards in sharing but it has to be in conformity with our Constitution,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said.
