Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) has kicked off the mass production of Mirage hatchback in the Philippines. MMPC outgoing president and chief executive officer Yoshiaki Kato led the unveiling of the first Philippine-made Mirage hatchback Thursday evening at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Parañaque City.
Mirage hatchback is part of the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) program of the government, in which MMPC invested some PHP4.3 billion to locally produce Mirage G4 sedan and hatchback.
Last February, MMPC presented the first locally made Mirage G4 sedan to President Rodrigo Duterte.
The Philippines is an additional hub for the Japanese carmaker for Mirage manufacturing aside from Thailand.
According to MMPC, the local production of Mirage benefits 31 local businesses that are supplying 255 parts for the car.
In an interview, MMPC first vice president for marketing Froilan Dytianquin told reporters that the company targets to produce around 21,000 units of Mirage in its Sta.Rosa, Laguna plant for this year.
The number is half of the total target production of 42,000 units for this year.
Aside from Mirage, MMPC is still manufacturing L300 and Adventure models.
Dytianquin said MMPC’s Laguna plant will focus on producing Mirage G4 and hatchback as the firm will phase out the assembly of L300 and Adventure by October this year.
MMPC eyes 45,000 locally manufactured Mirage next year, the executive said.
Moreover, Dytianquin said that MMPC has yet to feel the benefit of cost of local production of Mirage.
“We have not yet felt the benefit of the localization, being done locally made because we’re still in the first stage of the localization. So the first stage, there’s still a few local component,” he explained.
“But on the second stage, that would be probably where there will be changes already because the second stage will involve already stamping of the metal parts. We are set to have the stamping plant open next year that will contribute probably on some savings,” Dytianquin added.
