“Anong pakialam niya?” Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales said when asked to react on President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement calling for the Ombudsman and the Commission of Human Rights (CHR) to have his clearance before proceeding to investigate Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel.
“The Ombudsman can never be silenced. They can attempt to repress the messenger but it will never suppress the message,” Morales added who attended a symposium on best practices on anti-corruption held at Novotel in Quezon City.
President Duterte, in the press conference after delivering his SONA speech, said he will not allow his men to go to CHR to be investigated.
“Remember this. Human Rights Commission, you address your request through me because the Armed Forces is under me and the police is under me.,” Duterte said. “Kaya pag kinwestion ninyo sila for investigation, dadaan muna sa akin.”
“And for the Ombudsman to refrain from citing them in contempt or what. Because I have the authority to give the final say whether they will attend or not,” he added.
