“We need the equipment to meet the challenges,” President Rodrigo Duterte said during the Change of Command Ceremony of the Philippine Army at the Philippine Army Headquarters Grandstand, Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City.
“I must leave with a strong Army that would really be capable of a simultaneous attack,” he added. “Archipelago tayo eh. I would not want to invent a situation because I would not… I would be
suggesting something that is lousy.”
The President said the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) can use proceeds from leasing of military lands to modernize the military.
“Wala na kayong ibang panahon, ibigay ko sa inyo, and you can fund the modernization,” he said.
“Buy all the equipment you need, to meet the challenges way, way ahead,” he said.
However, the President told the military not to sell lands.
“Yan na lang ang maiwan ko sa inyo. At kung may kaunting sobra, huwag ninyong ipagbili, because this is an – this belongs to the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Nobody is taking it from you,” he said.
“Hindi ito for sale kagaya ng iba, no, no. Just lease, 50 years, and you have the income, you have… aside from the regular annual budgetary needs that you have, may pansarili pa kayo na bibilhin ninyo ito, ito, what‟s the ideal, helicopters, for example. You know that‟s very important in insertions of troops right now in Mindanao,” Duterte said.
