European Union (EU) diplomatic delegation in the Philippines, the European Union Delegation to the Philippines said in a statement released December 14 that on December 7 the EU Council approved a directive regarding an agreement between EU social partners in the maritime sector which will provide stronger protection of seafarers on EU vessels.
According to an infographic released by the EU Delegation office, thirty-three percent or 33,966 of 102,861 masters and officers from non-EU countries in EU vessels are Filipinos.
“The objective of the agreement is to protect seafarers’ rights in case of abandonment; it provides compensation for contractual claims for death or long-term disability of seafarers due to occupational injury, illness or hazard,” the EU Delegation to the Philippines said.
The EU Delegation to the Philippines noted that in other countries seafarers still face abandonment without pay, being left behind for a long time without access to regular food supplies, medical treatment and without any means to return home.
“Thanks to the incorporation of this agreement into EU law, seafarers will be covered by a mandatory financial security system,” it added.
