Works are on-going for the construction of a 720-lineal meters landmark bridge project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to replace overflow bridge structure connecting the towns of Sta. Maria and Cabagan in Isabela province across the Cagayan River.

In his report to DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar, Region 2 Director Melanio C. Briosos said that the P639.6 million bridge project across Cagayan River is expected to be completed next year.

Funded on a multi-year program, the project involves the construction of a 12 spans bridge, concreting of two-lane approaches measuring 557 meters (6.70 meters wide), and additional 574-meter shoulder improvement, slope protection works, earthworks, drainage structure, and other miscellaneous structures.

When completed, the bridge and its approaches will significantly reduce travel time to Cordillera Administrative Region and benefit about 2,751 motorists per day, made possible with the connection of Santiago – Tuguegarao Road and Daang Maharlika (Cagayan Valley Road)

“The project will spur socio-economic development and increase productivity in the areas to alleviate the living condition of the populace as well as improve and provide direct access to and between outlying barangays, municipalities, and cities,” Director Briosos said.

Cabagan – Sta. Maria Overflow Bridge is usually impassable during heavy rains submerging the structure of floodwaters and swollen Cagayan River.

With its aesthetic design, the new bridge is seen to help boost the tourism in the province as it will be the first of its kind in the country.
